What is Vermiculite?

Vermiculite is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral that is mined in Russia, South Africa, China and Brazil.

It can be used in fibrous form, not unlike fibreglass or it can be molded or used in liquid form. Its most useful properties are its ability to withstand very high temperatures.

Kool Wrap cdip regular fibreglass tape with a Vermiculite coating to significantly raise the wrap’s ability to withstand temperatures of up to 1,150 degrees Celcius.

Vermiculite is also used in many applications including automotive and industrial brake pads, fireplaces, glass blowing processes and fire proof walls.

Vermiculite has often been associated with asbestos and is mined in similar mines and areas. But since the realisation of the dangers of asbestos, Vermiculite mines and factories are strictly tested to ensure that asbestos is not present in Vermiculite.
